A BONHEUR DU JOUR ( Ladies writing desk).

A Bonheur du Jour


A bonheur du jour French, ("daytime delight") is a type of small lady's writing desk. First introduced in Paris around 1760. This one dates from around the 1920-30s ( Art Deco period ) and is a lovely example with it's balanced clean lines and honey coloured patina. With Satinwood cross banding inlays to the doors, desk top etc. It remains in original condition with a finished polished wood back enabling use anywhere in the room, not just against a wall. The doors contain solid brass mesh with cross section solid brass grill, finished off with brass floral buttons to the centres. The ormolu swag handles and key escutcheon on the single drawer contain a writing slope and sections for stationery, pens and papers etc.

FRENCH BOULLE CLOCK .

French Boulle Clock


Dates from from the late 1880s-1890 has been cleaned and restored and in is working order. Standing 15" high it is highly decorative in the early French style of Boulle work, named after the French cabinetmaker Andre' Boulle who inlayed brass decorative pieces into Tortoiseshell. in furniture making. The French barrel movement is an 8 day striking on a gong and has inscribed on the back plate the name of maker "MARTI" Medalle D'Argent Paris 1889 No.32158

Dates from around the early 1900's. Spring balance movement stamped New Haven Clock Company USA. Twin 8 day movements.
Brass bezel with bevelled glass front. Some staining on the ceramic face due to constant handling when being wound.

Mid Victorian Mahogany Nursing Chair


This lovely Victorian nursing chair has been completely re-upholstered with new webbing, springs etc. and is in very good condition. It retains it's original patina and with it's small size, is very attractive.

Staffordshire Dinner Service
Staffordshire dinner service

This classic dinner service has four tureens, two small and two large along with ladle and oval drip plates. Three different sized plates giving a minimun of eight place settings. Plate sizes are 8", 9" and 10" Diametre. Four oval serving plates in graduating sizesranging from 11" to 17". This service would have been a 12 place setting as four 9" plates are missing. The other sizes are complete.

Ceramic Wine Jugs.

These unusual ceramic wine jugs are for sale at £120 for the pair. They are perfect in so far as they do not have any chips or cracks, although some flaking is apparent on the enamels mainly on the green.

A ceramics expert has suggested they are probably of Scottish origin around 1850-1860. The are five and a half inches high by four and half inches wide.

Around the top is shown a grapevine and below animals dressed in cloaks, wearing feathered headress enjoying a picnic with flagons of wine.

George 111 Mahogany Chest of Drawers

This Georgian chest of drawers dates from around 1780. It construction is of solid mahogany, with mahogany veneered drawer fronts onto pine. The drawers are oak lined and have the original swan necked handles attached.

The chest stands on bracket feet and is 46 inches wide and 37 inches high.

Regency Carver Chair

This Regency chair dates from around 1820-30. Made of Mahogany with slender turned legs and with overall classic decoration. The splat back has an elegant slated design along with the turned cross stretchers.

The finish is original with a lovely patina and has a drop in seat covered in a wine coloured fabric.
